QUEBEC QUEBEC CARTIER MINING has chosen a pair of BUCYRUS 495 electric shovels for use at its Mount Wright iron mine. The new shovels will join a fleet of production equipment that includes five Bucyrus 295BII shovels.
The new 495 shovels have many improvements including the SuperCab providing more space, better visibility and greater operator comfort. Additional work room has been created for service, and roof hatches added for easy access to all shovel components. The 495s have a third rail system (allowing the use of larger, wider, flangeless lower rollers) and lowered swing planetaries (for improved maintainability and ease of access) and many other features that are designed for extended life and ease of maintenance. They are powered by a proven Siemens AC electric drive system that eliminates brushes, fuses and high-maintenance items that would be found on a shovel with DC drive.
