VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA – RIO TINTO has signed a five-year contract naming CATERPILLAR its primary supplier of ancillary mining equipment for Rio’s worldwide mining operations. The agreement covers certain classes of haul trucks and support equipment.
Rio Tinto expects to spend more than US$1 billion on heavy equipment from Caterpillar and other suppliers over the next five years. Its contract with Cat focuses on competitive costs to operate and maintain equipment over its life cycle, and it provides for continuous technology and service improvements. The contract will be fulfilled by Cat’s Global Mining Division.
