New power transmission technology from MagnaDrive of Seattle, Wash., offers major efficiency, reliability and safety improvements for conveyor installations. This technology uses rare-earth permanent magnets to transmit torque across an air gap; hence there is no physical connection between the motor and the driven equipment.

MagnaDrive provides an adjustable speed drive for applications up to 1,500 hp such as fans, pumps and blowers. A coupling is also available for constant speed applications up to 1,000 hp such as conveyors. A unique feature of the coupling is that it automatically shuts down the equipment due to torque overload or material jams before the motor or equipment is damaged.

Customers in the United States are already using MagnaDrive technology. It has replaced fluid couplings in two bucket elevators at a cement plant, in a coal mine conveyor, and on an elevating conveyor at a coal-fired electric plant.
