Minerao Serra do Sossega SA has chosen OUTOKUMPU to supply key process equipment to the Sossego copper concentrator in Brazil. Next year Outokumpu will deliver TankCell 160 flotation cells for the rougher and cleaner-scavenger circuits. They are equipped with FrothMaster froth imaging systems. The cleaner circuit will be delivered by a partnership of Outokumpu and CANADIAN PROCESS TECHNOLOGIES. It includes CPT cleaner columns, an Outokumpu Courier 6 SL on-line analyzer and sample-handling equipment, and an Outokumpu Supaflo high rate thickener for dewatering the copper concentrate.
Although Outokumpu has supplied a large number of flotation cells to Brazil, this is the first delivery of the TankCell and Courier 6 equipment to Brazil. Outokumpu earlier provided flash smelting plants to Minerao Serra da Fortaleze SA and Caraiba Metais SA as well as a steel belt sintering plant for CBMM. It is also about to finalize a calcination plant project with Lurgi Metallurgie for CVRD Alunorte.
The Sossego concentrator has a projected annual capacity of 140,000 tons of Cu conc, making it the largest in the country. Start-up is planned for 2004. This is the first of several planned CVRD copper projects in the Carrajas area of Brazil, where CVRD already has an iron mine. Minerao Serra do Sossega is a subsidiary of CVRD, the largest mining company in the Americas.
