MEXICO – The El Sauzal mine belonging to Goldcorp of Vancouver is the first gold mine to be decommissioned under terms of the International Cyanide Management Code. The mine, located in Chihuahua State, Mexico, was nearing the end of its life in 2014 when a pit wall failed and closure was accelerated. El Sauzel was initially certified in March 2008, and as is required by the code, recertified in 2011 and 2014. Goldcorp decommissioned the mine, and the property was independently audited against the International Cyanide Management Institute’s (ICMI) verification protocol. The auditor found that the risks related to cyanide have been minimized to the point that the Cyanide Code no longer applies to the El Sauzal site. The summary audit report and the auditor’s credentials can be found at the ICMI website CyanideCode.org.
