QUEBEC Thermal fragmentation for the recovery of 2,000 oz of gold has begun at the Denain and Lac Rose properties near Val d'Or. The deposits belong to MIRABEL RESOURCES of Montreal. The company has negotiated a $500,000 loan, repayable in 12 months, to finance production.
Thermal fragmentation on a commercial basis is new to the Canadian mining industry. The technique involves drilling a pilot hole in the deposit, then heating the area around it. The thermal shock fractures the ore into small pieces which are vacuumed out of the hole.
Mirabel plans to develop more properties for production using thermal extraction next year. The company's website is at www.RessourcesMirabel.com.
