GALLIVARE, Sweden - The NORDIC ROCK TECH CENTRE (RTC) has established a new international consortium for the development of ground support systems and equipment. The group includes BARRICK GOLD and XSTRATA NICKEL, both of Toronto, BOLIDEN of Sweden, ANDRA of France, ATLAS COPCO of Sweden, KGHM CUPRUM of Poland, LKAB of Sweden, NORMET of Finland, and SANDVIK of Sweden as well as RTC, which will act as project manager.

The participants will concentrate on ground support adapted to large deformations, monitoring methods, and the education of engineers and operating crews. This program is called MIGS (mining initiative for development of ground support systems and equipment) and grew out of RTC's Faster and Better Drifting program.
