SUDBURY, Ontario Just weeks after settling a strike with its mine and smelter workers, FALCONBRIDGE saw the first offer to its office, clerical and technical workers (members of USWA Local 2020) rejected. On Feb. 26, two days before the old contract expired, the union voted 95% to reject the company's offer. However, a tentative agreement was reached just hours before the union was in a legal strike position.

Union members voted 80% in favour of the new three-year collective agreement. The deal includes a 2% wage increase in the first and second years; a cost of living allowance in the third year; a $2,000 settlement bonus; and accords on pensionable earnings calculation, interpretation of voluntary early retirement, and review of contracting out decisions.
