XINING, China Boliden subsidiary BOLIDEN CONTECH has signed a contract to deliver a lead smelter to WESTERN MINING in China. The contract covers constructions and equipment delivery for a lead smelter, supervising the installation, and the provision of engineering and commissioning services. The contract is worth SEK40 million.

The new smelter will replace existing shaft furnaces, which have been condemned for environmental reasons. The heart of the new installation will be a top-blown rotary converter (TBRC) Kaldo furnace. It will produce about 50,000 tons of crude lead per year. A condensing unit for sulphur dioxide is included so that sulphur will be recovered as acid. The new smelter will be operational in about two years.

Western Mining operates several lead mines and two refineries.
