The all new Jaguar XJ sedan, unveiled last month at the Paris Auto Show, boasts not only total luxury, but a unique aluminum structure made possible by the pioneering technology of Montreal's Alcan Inc. This is the first volume production vehicle with a unibody structure manufactured primarily of aluminum sheet. Jaguar relied on Alcan to design a stamped sheet structure that is 40% lighter than an equivalent steel body. The new XJ is also 60% stiffer than the previous model. The hood, trunk lid, doors, and fenders are also made of aluminum, all of which also contributes to reduced curb weight. The new vehicle is almost 200 kg lighter than the previous model.
