Vancouver-based ALBERTA STAR DEVELOPMENT has named Peter Read its senior exploration consultant. He has an extensive knowledge of the Red Lake Gold Belt in Ontario where Alberta Star is exploring its Dixie Lake project.

Robert P. Blakestad has become the VP exploration for Denver-based APEX SILVER MINES. Holder of a BSc in mining engineering from the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology and an MSc in geology from the University of Colorado, Blakestad was most recently CEO of International Taurus Resources.

CANALASKA VENTURES of Vancouver has appointed Dr. Karl Schimann as manager, uranium exploration division. He worked for 20 years with Cogema, in both uranium and gold exploration. Schimann was the project manager at Cigar Lake, from discovery throughout the exploration phase, and was the senior mine geologist, responsible for the geological control department at the McClean Lake mine. He was Cogema's district geologist for the Canadian Cordillera and head of Cogema's Saudi Arabia exploration office.

Mark Cruise has joined Vancouver-based CARDERO RESOURCE CORP. as VP exploration. Previously he was employed by Anglo American, including a stint in Vancouver examining copper and zinc projects in North America.

CHINA DIAMOND CORP. of London, Ont., has named Michael Michaud its new president; previously he was the company's VP exploration. Other appointments at China Diamond include former-president Philip Cassis as vice-chairman of the board and Ben Au as CFO.

Vancouver's ROCA MINES recently named John J. Watkins its senior project geologist. An expert in VMS deposits, his experience includes projects and mines throughout Canada, the United States, Latin America and the South Pacific. He is a graduate of Queen's University in Kingston, Ont.

VISTA GOLD of Denver, Colo., is pleased to announce the promotion of Howard M. Harlan to the position of VP business development and the appointment of Warren R.G. Bates to the position of chief geologist. Harlan was previously manager of corporate administration with the company and Bates (a chemistry and geology graduate of the University of Manitoba) was international exploration manager.

Wayne E. Holmstead is the new president and CEO of Toronto-based WESTERN TROY CAPITAL RESOURCES. Previous-president Stanley Mourin has accepted the position of chairman. The company is working on its McLeod Lake polymetallic project in the Eastmain area of Quebec.
