Professor Roussos Dimitrakopoulos has joined the Mining, Metals and Materials Engineering department of MCGILL UNIVERSITY in Montreal as a Canada Research Chair, arriving from the University of Queensland in Australia. At McGill, he will be furthering his research into techniques to mitigate the risks inherent in the process of mining. He uses stochastic processes both as a means to model orebodies, and as a way of optimizing mine planning. Dimitrakopoulos has received $3.5 million in grant funding from major government granting agencies. In addition, the Australian mining giant BHP Billiton acknowledged his work at a ceremony on June 10th, presenting Dimitrakopoulos with a further $800,000 to continue his research.
Andr de Guise, P.Eng., has been appointed vice-president, operations of both APPALACHES RESOURCES and PUMA EXPLORATION, both based in Rimouski, Qu. De Guise is a mining engineer with over 33 years of experience in surface and underground mining operations with various companies, including American Bonanza Gold Mines as project manager for the Fenelon gold project in Quebec, as mine manager of the Francoeur mine and vice-president, operations in Quebec and Newfoundland for Richmont Mines Inc., and as director of operations at The Canadian Salt Company's Seleine mine.
Toronto-based DIADEM RESOURCES has appointed Rodney N. Thomas, P.Geol. as CEO in addition to being president. Paul A. Carroll continues as non-executive chairman of the board. Diadem is a diamond exploration and development company.
Patrick Evans has resigned from his positions as president and CEO of SOUTHERNERA DIAMONDS INC., based in Toronto. Alasdair MacPhee, executive VP, will act as president and CEO until a successor is chosen. Evans has served as president and CEO since 2001. He will resume the role of a non-executive director of SouthernEra Diamonds Inc.
