Dr. Peter Kaiser, president of LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY's Mining Innovation, Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corp. (MIRARCO), mining engineering professor, chair for Rock Engineering and Ground Control, and director of the Geomechanics Research Centre, was recently inducted as a Fellow of the CANADIAN ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING. Kaiser has achieved national and international recognition through his research and consulting. These awards include the 1993 Laurentian University Research Excellence Award, the 1994 J.A. Franklin Award from the Geotechnical Society of Canada, the 1993 Schlumberger Lecture Award for Excellence in Rock Mechanics, and the 1991 CIM Distinguished Service Award. He is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, and is an Honourary Professor in Mining Engineering from Northeastern University, Shenyang, China. He is the author of approximately 200 technical and scientific publications.
President and CEO of INMET MINING, Richard Ross, has been elected chair of the MINING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA. He is an active member of the MAC board and a key member of the MAC Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) governance team. Ross is also president of the CANADIAN-TURKISH BUSINESS COUNCIL, chairman of the OK TEDI MINING board of directors, and sits on the board of St. Joseph's Health Centre, Toronto. Ross replaces SYNCRUDE's Jim Carter who has completed his two-year term.
ABER DIAMOND CORP., by virtue of its 51% interests in the retailer, has reorganized management at HARRY WINSTON. Peter Schneirla is now vice-chair of Harry Winston and VP of Aber. Jim Seuss becomes president of Harry Winston's retail and wholesale divisions. Ray Simpson is now the COO of Harry Winston and VP of corporate development at Aber. The new chief marketing officer at Harry Winston is Susan Korb. Charles Stanley takes up the role of VP of market development at Harry Winston and director of market research at Aber. Robert Scott continues as CFO at Harry Winston.
Eduardo (Ed) Baer is joining CANADIAN SHIELD RESOURCES as its chairman and CEO. He has experience in business development, strategic planning, finance, investor relations and management.
EUROPEAN GOLDFIELDS has named David Reading to the position of CEO beginning on Sept. 1, 2004. He is currently general manager of exploration at Randgold Resources.
Following the retirement of George H. Plewes, SOUTHWESTERN RESOURCES CORP. has nominated W. David Black as chair of the board of directors. Black is an associate counsel with the DuMoulin Black law firm and has sat on the Southwestern board since 2000.
NEWMONT MINING CORP. has elevated Russell Ball to the position of VP and controller. He was previously the group executive for investor relations.
Derrick Gill has been appointed as an independent director to LINEAR GOLD CORP. He is a director and executive VP of Voisey's Bay Nickel Co. as well as president of the joint education and training authority overseeing aboriginal skills development and employment related to the Voisey's Bay nickel project.
VALGOLD RESOURCES has named Andrew F.B. Milligan to the chairmanship of the company. He replaces Frank Lang who is giving up the job of chairman but will remain on the ValGold board.
