You were bang-on with your description [Canadian Mining Perspectives, March 5, 2008] of the ritual of the annual PDAC gathering. I am thrilled to see how it has grown. It has been an interesting study for me because I have a stake in its growth.

When I was with Inco, I was invited to sit on a SWAT team-type committee of the PDAC in the 1990s. Our mission was to turn the annual "reunion" into a true international event. At the time, the convention attracted only a few thousand visitors and world metals markets were not exactly rock 'n roll. It was breathtaking this week to see attendance had reached 20,000 from 100 countries. Wow. What we did so many years ago on that committee - debating and arguing and strategizing late into the night - worked, and worked big time.
