Last week’s editorial included news that the Eritrean government had ordered the immediate cessation of all mineral exploration activity in that country. Rumours about why this happened have reached CMJ’s ears. The story is that the Sudanese guerillas have been wandering into Eritrea and threatening to target Westerners. Therefore, the Eritrean government made its decision in order to protect foreigners, but doesn’t want to say so publicly for fear of offending the Sudanese. That’s the rumour; no word as to its veracity.
