TIMMINS, Ontario The engineering, procurement and project construction management for FALCONBRIDGE's Montcalm mine development has been awarded to AMEC of Toronto. The project includes a new 750,000-t/y underground mine, a new nickel-copper circuit at the Kidd metallurgical facility, and construction of concentrate-receiving facilities at the Kidd smelter.

The Montcalm deposit lies about 70 km northwest of Timmins. The mineral resource is estimated to be 7.0 million tonnes grading 1.39% Ni, 0.67% Cu and 0.06% Co. The mine will produce 8,000 t/y of nickel. Falconbridge purchased the deposit from Outokumpu Mines in 2001 for $14 million.

AMEC's Mining & Metals unit offers a full range of services to the mining industry. Details are available at www.amec.com.
