NICKEL-COPPER: KGHM lays off 20 at Victoria project

ONTARIO – KGHM International has revised the project schedule of the Victoria nickel-copper-PGE-gold development project near Sudbury, and laid off 20 of its workers at the site. Two years ago, KGHM announced that the Victoria mine would be reopened in 2019, but the slowdown is blamed on the poor outlook for metals prices. The ore was to have been treated at Vale’s nearby Clarabelle mill. The Victoria deposit contains 14.5 million inferred tonnes with a grade of 2.5% Cu, 2.5% Ni, and 7.6 g/t of precious metals. Last October, KGHM put is McCreedy West nickel-copper mine on care and maintenance to shed 25 jobs. There were also 15 more jobs cut at the Morrison project.
