THOMPSON, MANITOBA - Residents of this northern community welcomed news that INCO LTD. of Toronto will put the 1-D Lower orebody at its Thompson underground mine into production during 2008. Development work will start next year and cost about US$34 million.

The development of the 1-D Lower orebody will allow access to additional exploration targets in the mine, as well as providing the opportunity to reassess previous drilling results using more advanced technology.

Inco's Manitoba operations produced a record-breaking 116 million lb of finished nickel in 2004. The company operates the Birchtree and Thompson mines as well as mineral processing, smelting and refining facilities in Manitoba.

Earlier, Inco revealed it doubled capital spending at its Manitoba operations this year to roughly US$80 million. Planned work includes rebuilding the smelter furnace. The company's website is at www.Inco.com.
