FORT McMURRAY, Alta. Bitumen production from the Muskeg River oil sands mine resumed on April 4. Production was interrupted in January by a fire that damaged the solvent extraction circuit in the froth treatment plant. Winter weather slowed the repairs.

The Athabasca Oil Sand project (which includes the Muskeg River mine and bitumen recovery plant) is a joint venture of SHELL CANADA (60%), CHEVRON CANADA (20%) and WESTERN OIL SANDS (20%). It is operated by ALBIAN SANDS ENERGY. It was profiled in the October 2002 issue of CMJ (Muskeg River article), just a month before its official commissioning.
