THUNDER BAY, Ontario The new Metso Superior Mark II primary gyratory crusher has been commissioned ahead of schedule at the Lac des Iles mine of NORTH AMERICAN PALLADIUM. The old one was shut down temporarily in September 2002 to diagnose continuing operating problems. The bottom shell was found to have two vertical fractures that were repaired by the middle of December. However, North American Palladium went ahead and ordered the new crusher in February for a cost of approximately US$3 million, including installation. It will handle a throughput of at least 15,000 tonnes/day.

Palladium production from Lac des Iles was on target during the first half of 2003 at 117,860 oz. This mine is the only primary producer of PGMs in Canada and one of the largest open pit reserves in the world. At the end of 2002 proven and probable reserves totaled 88.65 million tonnes grading 1.51 g/t Pd, 0.17 g/t Pt and 0.12 g/t Au. There were an additional 65.9 million tonnes of measured and indicated resources plus 73.0 million tonnes of inferred material, all of a grade similar to the reserves.
