MONTREAL - ALCAN INC. has been recognized as a co-recipient of the first ever Prix Qubcois de l'Entreprise Citoyenne by Korn/Ferry International and L'Actualit magazine for its innovative aluminum spent potlining recycling plant in the Saguenay region. The Prix Qubcois de l'Entreprise Citoyenne was established to recognize the outstanding corporate citizenship efforts of Quebec-based companies. Alcan will share this years award with the Cirque du Soleil.

Alcan's spent potlining treatment plant is a unique facility that will recycle approximately 80,000 tonnes of material per year. The plant is expected to be fully operational during the second quarter of 2008 and will employ around 50 people.

Spent potlining is generated during the de-lining of pots after aluminum smelting. The spent potlining is composed of carbon and various elements and is traditionally pre-treated and placed in a land fill under strict precautions. Through a new process, all of the spent potlining is recycled, providing the global aluminum industry with a sustainable reusable solution for this industrial material.
