BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania the South African subsidiary of FFE MINERALS has won the contract to supply the world's largest single-stage SAG mill. It is going to the Tarkwa Phase IV development in Ghana.

FFE gives the mill details thus: 8.23 metres inside shell diameter; 12.19 metres effective grinding length; 12.8 metres between flanges; and dual 7,000 motors. That makes it the largest low-aspect, dual-pinion gear-driven mill ever to be designed and built. The new mill has an annual throughput of 4.2 million tons of ore. It should be commissioned and handed over for production by the end of 2004. Check out the FFE website at www.ffeminerals.com.

GOLD FIELDS owns the Tarkwa gold mine, and is expanding capacity with the US$159-million SAG and CIL project. The expansion will add 200,000 oz of gold to yearly output, pushing it past the 1-million-oz mark.
