NUNAVUT - The NUNAVUT TUNNGAVIK INC. (NTI), the organization that manages all Inuit-owned land in Nunavut, has approved a policy concerning uranium exploration and mining. The NTI board unanimously agreed that such activities may be carried out on Inuit lands as long as certain conditions are met.

The NTI spelled out the objectives of its policy in five areas. 1) The uranium produced in Nunavut must only be used for peaceful purposes. 2) The Inuit will share in the economic benefits of a uranium industry. 3) The health and safety of workers and residents will be protected. 4) Inuit communities will be given the opportunity to participate fully in environmental assessment, construction and operation of any new mines or mills. 5) Uranium exploration and mining must not cause significant adverse effects on people, the environment or wildlife.

The current search for uranium in the Thelon Basin might someday lead to the development of new mines. The NTI is exercising foresight by issuing its policy with clear expectations. The organizations website is at www.Tunngavik.com.
