SASKATCHEWAN – The expansion of the McClean Lake mill to handle ore from the Cigar Lake uranium mine is underway but the start has been pushed back, says Cameco Corp. of Saskatoon. Cameco is the 50% owner of the Cigar Lake mine, and Areva Resources Canada operates the McClean Lake mill.

The ore receiving systems are operational and more that 350 tonnes or ground ore slurry has been shipped to McClean Lake and stored in tanks. To accommodate the slurry, the storage facility was expanded. Engineering is complete and long lead times items have been received for the increase in throughput. Cameco reported that the pumps, piping, electrical system and instrumentation have yet to be completed, causing start-up to be postponed past Q2 2014.

Areva is working on a project to double the 1-million-lb/m capacity of the McClean Lake mill so that it can process all of the ore from Cigar Lake. The Cigar Lake mine will ramp up to 18 million lb/y by 2018.

The Cigar Lake mine is owned 50% by Cameco, 37% by Areva, 8% by Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada and 5% by Tepco Resources. The McClean Lake mill is owned 70% by Areva, 22.5% by Denison Mines and 7.5% by Ourd Canada. Please see either Cameco.com or us.areva.com for more information.
