NEW BRUNSWICK – Xstrata Zinc's venerable Brunswick zinc-lead mine near Bathurst took its last underground production blast yesterday. As the project winds down, the last tonne should pass through the concentrator on April 19, 2013, says general manager Greg Ashe.

Last week the mine received notice that it is the recipient of the 2012 Regional John T. Ryan Award for the lowest accident frequency among metal mines in the Quebec and East Region. The mine was also the recipient of the 2011 National John T. Ryan Award and the Work Safe NB Award at the provincial level. (See CMJ, April 2013, page 26 or online by clicking here).

"We fell just short of back-to-back national awards," said Ashe, "but it is still a very positive way to close the mine.

"The achievement demonstrates the solid commitment of our employees at Brunswick Mine to the 'zero harm' approach inherent to Xstrata Zinc’s Vision and Values. It also shows that our employees are successfully navigating through the noise of closure and focused on doing the right things. Our safety culture starts with a vision and a belief that it is entirely possible and a moral obligation to operate in such a manner that everyone returns home safe and healthy each and every day. Brunswick Mine is demonstrating on a daily basis that it should and can be done," he added.
