CHILE – The world’s largest copper producer, CODELCO, has selected ABB technology for its Gaby solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. ABB will supply four 40-kA, 270-V DC rectifier systems for the EW plant. Four rectifier transformers, a harmonic filter, a harmonic filter engineering study, as well as commissioning and start-up services are included in the multi-million-dollar contract.
The Gaby project is located 203 km east of Antofagasta. Codelco is building an open pit and heap leaching facility in addition to the SX/EW plant. Start-up of the US$527-million project is planned for early 2008. Annual capacity will be 150,000 tonnes of copper cathodes.
