LABRADOR – The Iron Ore Company of Canada was ordered to pay $30,000 earlier this month by the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Court for violations under the Fisheries Act.

IOC pleaded guilty to an incident that occurred in October 2012. The company failed to notify an inspector of having dumped effluent into Luce Lake, a fish-bearing body of water, without authorization. The effluent contained more suspended solids than stipulated in the regulations. The company also failed to provide a written report to an inspector within 30 days of the incident.

Of the $30,000, half represents a fine and the other $15,000 will be paid to the Environmental Offenders Registry.
