FINLAND – After three years of multi-stakeholder consultations, Finland becomes the first country outside Canada to adopt the Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program for corporate social responsibility. TSM was created by the Mining Association of Canada several years ago, and all MAC members participate in the program. FinnMinn, the Finnish Mining Association, chose TSM as it is the most advanced initiative in the mining industry. The program contributes to the transparency and accountability of the mining industry and will enhance social acceptance among the different stakeholders in Finland. “TSM has proven its effectiveness in Canada, and we at FinnMin believe it will be a useful tool for Finnish mining companies when the companies develop their sustainability reporting in the future,” comments Markus Ekberg, chairman of FinnMin.
