Sofi Filtration has joined the MINERVA project, an EU-funded initiative focused on circular economy-based mining and mineral processing in harsh Arctic conditions. Sofi’s involvement focuses on sustainable water management at the Sokli mining project in Lapland, Finland.
Sofi said it will pilot its proprietary filtration technology at Sokli to demonstrate the environmental benefits of efficient particle removal and how its system can be used to improve discharge water quality — a major issue that can pollute downstream water sources.
Riina Salmimies, the CEO of Sofi, said the company hopes to use this opportunity to validate advanced water treatment technologies. “MINERVA represents a unique opportunity to demonstrate emerging solutions at an unprecedented scale,” said Salmimies.
Through MINERVA, the company will work alongside Finnish Minerals Group, Betolar and RINA Consulting S.p.A. to demonstrate mining’s role in meeting EU climate targets.
The project has an EUR 8.8 million budget, including EUR 5.3 million from the EU LIFE programme. It is expected to run three and a half years.
