QUEBEC – Rio Tinto Alcan, headquartered in Montreal, has produced the first metal from its US$1.1-billion AP60 Arvida aluminum smelter. This is a turning point from construction project to a 60,000-t/y commercial producer. Ramp-up to full production will be completed in a few weeks.

The AP60 technology was developed in France by parent company Rio Tinto. Metal production from each cell will be 40% higher than from older cells, giving the technology low energy consumption, low operating costs and making it environmentally friendly.
