NORTHWEST TERRITORIES – First production from the Gahcho Kué diamond mine 300 km northeast of Yellowknife is on track for Q3 2016 as construction reaches the 17% mark. The mine is a joint venture of De Beers Canada (51% and operator) and Mountain Province Diamonds (49%).

Preparation is well underway. Roughly 670 truckloads of equipment and supplies have reached the Gahcho Kué site via this winter's ice road, and another 100 truckloads are expected by the end of March. Construction of the main airstrip has begun and prefabricated units for the main camp have arrived. Both should be ready to use before the end of 2014. Eight 500-m3 fuel tanks have been installed, and fuel deliveries are underway. Two 18,000-m3 fuel tanks are also under construction.

There are about 120 people at the site now, but that number is expected to swell to 700 as construction moves forward.

The partners are updating the feasibility study and expect its completion by the end of March. A new reserve estimate, revised capital and operating costs, and fresh project economics will be available then.

Readers can view photographs of site activities at MountainProvince.com. A project video is also available.
