MONTANA – As announced in September, Toronto’s Barrick Gold has laid off 135 of its open pit crew at the Golden Sunlight gold mine near Whitehall. The change became effective Nov. 30, 2015. Low gold prices and concerns about slope stability made the open pit the target of closure. Underground mining continues at Golden Sunlight with between 50 and 60 contract workers from J.R. Redpath Mining Contractors and Engineers of North Bay, ON. Production at Golden Sunlight was expected to be between 90,000 and 105,000 oz of gold in 2015 at an all-in sustaining cost of US$1,000 to US$1,025 per oz. Please see Barrick.com.
