NRCan: New minister Rickford a Northern Ontario native

OTTAWA – The Hon. Greg Rickford was appointed federal minister of Natural Resources Canada this week. He replaces Joe Oliver who is taking over the finance portfolio upon the resignation of former Finance Minister Joe Flaherty.

OTTAWA – The Hon. Greg Rickford was appointed federal minister of Natural Resources Canada this week. He replaces Joe Oliver who is taking over the finance portfolio upon the resignation of former Finance Minister Joe Flaherty.

A native of Kenora, ON, Rickford holds a nursing diploma from Mohawk College and a BSc in nursing from the University of Victoria. He also holds an MBA from Université Laval and both civil and common law degrees from McGill University.

Rickford was first elected to the House of Commons in October 2008. He has been parliamentary secretary for official languages and the department of indian and northern development (FedNor). He was until his appointment to NRCan the minister of state for science and technology. He will retain his FedNor portfolio.

The appointment of the new Minister of Natural Resources was applauded by industry. The Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada noted that he has long demonstrated a passion for the natural resources sector.

Being from Northern Ontario also increases his suitability for his new responsibilities.
