Troilus Mining has secured approval for a 70-MW power allocation from Hydro-Québec and the provincial government to continue development on its flagship gold-copper project in northern Quebec.

The allocation will support development and operation of the Troilus project, one of the province's largest critical minerals undertakings. The company said the decision will ensure access to grid power needed for engineering activities to advance. The project will draw electricity from Quebec's hydroelectric network, providing access to the province’s low-carbon energy. Troilus said this access will help the company meet its long-term emission reduction goals.

Justin Reid, the chief executive officer of Troilus, said this decision demonstrates how important critical minerals are to Quebec’s economy. “Troilus is positioned to become a long-life project for Quebec — one capable of delivering meaningful economic benefits, supporting domestic copper supply and contributing to long-term regional development in northern Quebec,” he said.

A May 2024 feasibility study outlined a 22-year open-pit operation, demonstrating an average production of roughly 300,000 gold-equivalent oz. annually. According to the study, peak annual production could be more than 500,000 gold-equivalent oz.

Troilus estimated the project will create about 1,000 construction jobs and more than 680 permanent positions.
