VANCOUVER - NORTH AMERICAN TUNGSTEN, operator of the CanTung mine in the Northwest Territories, is making a move toward vertical integration. It has signed a memorandum of understanding with TUNDRA COMPOSITES of Minnesota to create a 50/50 joint venture for the processing and production of "a variety of tungstate powders, intermediates, including ammonium paratungstate (APT), and composites from tungsten concentrates and other metals including bismuth and steel."
Tundra has developed unique technology for making such materials. The technology is intended to reduce processing costs, allow a production of a wide range of materials, and accept various concentrate grades, scrap and intermediates as feed. Together the partners will build a pilot plant at Bear Lake, Minn. This fall, they will make a decision on going to a commercial-sized facility that would cost approximately US$10.0 million. The tungsten powder produced by the plant is intended for sale to Tundra.
