ONTARIO - Toronto-based XSTRATA NICKEL (formerly Falconbridge) has pledged $5 million for the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) at LAURENTIAN UNIVERSITY in Sudbury.
"Advanced research and innovation at CEMI will enhance our competitiveness in Sudbury and at our projects and operations globally," said Mike Romaniuk, Xstrata Nickel's VP of Sudbury operations.
CEMI was created in November 2003 by the Ontario government to capitalize on the benefits of a "cluster" approach to developing the mineral sector. Its vision is to become an international centre for world-class, industry-driven mining, processing and exploration research. Earlier this year the Ontario government made a $10-million contribution to the centre, and last March Inco (now CVRD-INCO) promised $5 million. Other contributions have come from the City of Sudbury and Laurentian University.
