ONTARIO - A partnership of the ONTARIO MINING ASSOCIATION and the ONTARIO MINISTRY OF NORTHERN DEVELOPMENT AND MINES (MNDM) will share the cost of further rehabilitation work for the tailings at the former Kam Kotia mine near Timmins. Approximately 48,000 m of tails will be removed from around the mine site, relocated and stabilized in an newly constructed impoundment area.
Several phases of major environmental rehabilitation work at the Kam Kotia copper-zinc mine have already been completed. Rehabilitation of this site is expected to be complete in approximately two years.
Through its abandoned mines rehabilitation program, the Ontario government is investing $60 million to address hazards and reclaim land at abandoned mine sites across Ontario. Since the program's inception in 1999, rehabilitation work and studies have been carried out at more than 75 sites and another 4,000 sites were assessed.
