NUNAVUT - Toronto-based Agnico-Eagle Mines reported on March 10, 2011, that the kitchen at its Meadowbank gold mine near Baker Lake suffered "extensive damage" during a fire that day. The fire was contained to the kitchen and no one was injured. No cause had been determined at press time.

The mill, camp dormitories and all other infrastructure were not affected. Operations at the mine are continuing.

Agnico will be assessing the potential impact of the fire. Without the ability to feed its workforce in this remote location, it may be necessary to temporarily reduce personnel at the mine. Another option might be to use the facilities at the exploration camp 10 km from the mine.

To correspond with the Meadowbank opening, CMJ published a technical story about it in the August 2010 issue.
