PERTH, Australia - Worldwide production of gold in 2010 reached a record high 2,652 tonnes, and should climb in the short term. However output is expected to slip over the longer term as exploration efforts are not replacing reserves.
Of the 60 gold producing countries, China was the largest. Australia was second, followed by the United States, South Africa and Russia. Canada lagged, its gold production slipping steadily since 1991.
If it is any consolations three of the world's largest gold producers in 2010 were Canadian - Barrick (No.1), Goldcorp (No.2) and Kinross (No.5).
