QUEBEC – Production has begun at the Bracemac-McLeod base metal mine near Matagami at an average rate of 3,000 t/d. The mine is a joint venture of Donner Metals (35%) of Vancouver and Glencore Xstrata (65% and operator).
Discovered in 2007, the $159 million Bracemac-McLeod mine is the twelfth zinc mine in the Matagami camp. Start-up was timed to coincide with the depletion of ore at the joint venture's Perseverance mine. Ore is treated at Glencore's nearby mill.
The new mine is supported by proven and probably reserves of 3.7 million tonnes grading 9.60% Zn, 1.26% Cu, 28.25 g/t Ag and 0.43 g/t Au. There is also an inferred resource of 2.6 million tonnes at 8.79% Zn, 1.31% Cu, 38.84 g/t Ag and 1.06 g/t Au.
