COLOMBIA – Glencore Xstrata of Baar, Switzerland, opened Prodeco's new coal port, Puerto Nuevo, with the Colombian president, Juan Manuel Santos, and senior members of his administration. Construction of the US$550-million port was begun by Glencore in 2010.

Approximately 21 million tonnes of thermal and metallurgical coal will pass through Puerto Nuevo annually bound for North America, Europe and Asia.

This is the first port in Cienaga to boast a direct loading system for coal. The train unloading station has a capacity of 8,000 t/h and a buffer silo for an additional 2,500 tonnes. The pier will handle Cape size vessels of up to 180,000 deadweight tonnes.

Glenstrata kept sustainability in mind during construction and equipping the port. Berms were built up to 17 metres high to isolate stockpiles and control dust emissions. The project also included the planting of 18,000 trees and the relocation of 800 animals.
