ONTARIO – The forest fire that broke out 3 km from Kirkland Lake on May 20 disrupted operations at two nearby mines. Kirkland Lake Gold was warned to expect a power interruption, and it shut down mining in an orderly fashion and evacuated its personnel. The company said the fire caused no damage to its assets.

Closer to Timmins, AuRico Gold, that operates the Young-Davidson mine, also experienced a power interruption, and said there was limited fire damage to several power poles. The mine continued to operate although milling activity was suspended.

About 300 homeowners and cottagers were evacuated from the Goodfish and Nettie Lake for safety reasons. Reports said the fire was controlled by Tuesday morning, although the situation may worsen as hot, dry weather is expected for the next few days.
