ONTARIO – Saint Jean Carbon of Oakville, ON, has begun construction of what will be North America’s first full mill and finishing line for the production of spherical, carbon coated graphite. This type of graphite has application in lithium ion batteries for the automotive industry. The company has filed a number of patents and worked with two universities to develop the process and engineering to build the first production line that with an average output of 5,000 t/y with less than 5% waste. The mill design is modular and can be set up directly at any battery manufacturing plant. Saint Jean says the highest grade coated spherical graphite sells for US$1,950 per tonne.
