OTTAWA – Northern Graphite Corp. of Ottawa says that tests conducted by Hazen Research have successfully produced spherical graphite from the Bissett Creek deposit 53 km east of Mattawa with a 99.99% graphitic carbon (Cg) purity. Large flake graphite as pure as 99.83% Cg has also been created in bench scale tests.

Spherical graphite is used to make anodes for lithium ion batteries and is manufactured from the flake concentrate commonly produced by graphite mines.

Northern Graphite plans now to have the testing scaled up to pilot plant size so that operating parameters can be defined for commercial operation and to estimate capital and operating costs. The company’s proprietary purification technology operates at lower temperatures than existing thermal techniques and without using strong acids as is the practice in China. Northern Graphite said its method involves relatively low retention times in the furnace and that should result is a cheaper continuous process rather a batch one.

The bankable feasibility study for the Bissett Creek project (August 2012) is available at NorthernGraphite.com.
