MADAGASCAR – Sherritt International Corp. has reported a second death this year at the Ambatovy joint venture. The most recent incident occurred on May 16, 2015. An ore stockpile failure occurred, and the loose material completely buried a dozer and its operator.
"We are all deeply saddened by the tragic event over the weekend. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the individual's family, friends and colleagues during this time," said David Pathe, president and CEO, Sherritt. "A full investigation is in progress and Sherritt is committed to determine the root causes of the incident."
On February 19, 2015, a contractor's employee was fatally overcome by hydrogen sulphide gas in the pressure acid leach plant. Two other workers were injured but recovered. Mitigation actions were implemented.
