Gold prices on Wed., July 13, again set records, briefly spiking above US$1,588 per ounce before settling back between US$1,584 and US$1,586 later in the day. That should set the gold miners grinning.

A look at the reasons gold is so popular might take some of that smile away. Analysts point to economic jitters fuelled by the near-insolvency of the Greek government. They warn of far-reaching effects across all the countries using the euro. There are also marathon talks going on in the United States in an attempt to solve that country's money woes before the bucket runs dry on August 2.

In today's wired world, where information is available in the blink of an eye, the gold price will continue to reflect quickly the failures of others.
