GROVETOWN, Georgia – GIW Industries, perhaps the best known maker of centrifugal slurry pumps, recently installed MDX pump technology at a major Chilean copper mine. One result was a dramatic reduction of total cost of ownership, and the increased productivity of the MDX technology boosted concentrator revenue by US$8 million and cut energy costs by US$1 million.

The new GIW MDX pump weighs 45,360 kg and boasts a 2.15-metre impeller. It replaced a pump weighing 68,040 kg, thus the energy savings. The new pump has also surpassed the clients goal of doubling the wear life of the pump, leading to maintenance savings. In this Chilean mine, the replaced technology was 30 years old. What worked well in previous decades isn't enough to keep up with modern demands.

The advances GIW has made in both engineering and materials have made tremendous improvements in pump performance and wear life, in extreme conditions such as pumping slurry over long distances. And GIW engineers and hydraulic experts are continually striving for even greater improvements.
