OTTAWA – The Mining Association of Canada has received the final report of the independent task force it convened to review tailings management requirements and guidance under its Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) initiative. The seven member task force was struck in March 2015 after the failure of the Mount Polley tailings dam the previous August in British Columbia. The task force made 29 recommendations aimed at enhancing tailings management requirements. They run the gamut from better tailings management strategy (design, building, operating and auditing) to aboriginal community engagement. The recommendations are aimed at MAC members for whom adherence to the TSM initiative is mandatory. The task force considers that the TSM system is robust and comprehensive, but that it must continue to evolve towards even higher standards. The extra costs associated with implementing all of its recommendations will be offset by improved public confidence in operational safety over the long run. Read the entire report of the task force on the MAC website Mining.ca.
