VASTERAS, Sweden - ABB AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES has won a US$20-million contract from LKAB to boost productivity by 25% at its iron ore mine in Kiruna, Sweden. The mine is to be deepened to 1,365 metres, an increase of about one-third.

ABB will supply ACS6000SD variable speed drives, 5,600-kW synchronous motors and AC800M control systems to four existing underground hoists at Kiruna. In addition, ABB will provide a new turnkey mine hoist with complete mechanics and brake system at surface level. The modernizations will begin early next year and continue through 2008.

ABB has a long tradition of co-operation with LKAB dating back more than 100 years. The first hoist was delivered to LKAB in 1948. ABB supplied the present 10 production hoists in Kiruna in the 1970s, which were modernized in the 1990s.
