The Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) and its Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network have announced progress on their associate partnership agreement with the Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG). This collaboration aims to align Canada's national mining innovation ecosystem with global technology leaders driving digital transformation in mining.
Chamirai Charles Nyabeze, vice president of business development at CEMI and network director of MICA, and Andrew Scott, Interim co-chief executive officer of GMG, signed the agreement. It establishes a framework for coordinated innovation, knowledge sharing, and ecosystem engagement.
The partnership will focus on co-developing innovation opportunities, sharing knowledge across networks, supporting joint events, facilitating data exchange, and advancing sustainable mining practices. Nyabeze emphasized that this collaboration will help accelerate the adoption of breakthrough technologies in mining operations.
Scott highlighted the importance of uniting the global industry around shared priorities and ensuring new technologies translate into real operational value. Douglas Morrison, president and CEO of CEMI, stated that the agreement expands the reach of Canada's innovation ecosystem, enabling worldwide deployment of technologies developed in Canada.
The MICA Network, launched in July 2021 with support from the Government of Canada's Strategic Innovation Fund, has grown into a $300 million national innovation ecosystem. GMG, with its global membership, serves as an internationally recognized platform for collaboration and standardization in mining innovation.
CEMI, founded in 2007, is a not-for-profit corporation that accelerates the commercialization of mining innovations. It manages the MICA Network, which supports the scale-up and commercialization of late-stage mining technologies in Canada and internationally.
GMG is a global collaborative organization dedicated to enabling the mining industry's digital and operational transformation. It connects leaders from various sectors to co-develop guidelines, share knowledge, and accelerate the deployment of high-impact technologies in the mining industry.
